For most of us, the idea of a holiday begins with planning. Dates are discussed weeks in advance. Leave applications are sent, resent, and approved. Budgets are calculated, hotels are compared, and flights are checked ten times a day, hoping prices drop, and only after everything is neatly arranged do we finally leave. Vir Das didn’t do any of that. Instead, he turned a bad week into a holiday with just a passport and a coin.
Vir Das Turned A Coin Toss Into An Improvised Holiday
Vir shared this story on Raunak Rajani’s YouTube show, Relationshit Advice. He spoke about a time when he was simply feeling a bit low. So one evening, without discussing plans or destinations, Vir called his wife. He didn’t ask her to pack, didn’t tell her where they were going, and didn’t even give her a heads-up. He just said, “Come down with your passport.”
No bags, no clothes, no planning, only coin flips. Once they decided they were going, Vir made one rule for the trip: every decision would be made by flipping a coin. At the airport, they checked which flights were leaving that night. There were only three destinations where Indians get a visa on arrival. They flipped, and Thailand won. After landing in Thailand, they had to choose where to go next: Koh Samui or Krabi. Krabi won the flip
They still hadn’t booked a hotel. They still had no clothes. They asked someone at the airport to suggest a website for stays. The site showed five options. With a flip of a coin again, they landed on Rayavadee, a stunning island resort surrounded by sea and cliffs. By this point, they had arrived on an island in the middle of the ocean with absolutely nothing. He hilariously added how every photo from that holiday shows them wearing gift-shop outfits and tourist T-shirts that say “I Love Thailand.” And somehow, it turned into a perfect holiday.

Why This Travel Idea Is Worth Trying
What Vir really did wasn’t just book a last-minute trip. He removed pressure to choose the best destination, find the perfect hotel, and plan outfits, schedules, or experiences. Instead, the coin decided. And once the decision was made, there was nothing left to overthink.
You don’t need celebrity money or luxury resorts to try this idea. The concept works even on a simple budget.
1. Start small
You don’t have to fly internationally. Pick two nearby cities or weekend destinations and flip a coin.
2. Limit your options
Vir didn’t scroll endlessly. He reduced choices and picked from a few destinations and a few hotels.
3. Add randomness
Use a random number generator, dice, or coin. Once it makes a decision, don’t change it.
4. Travel light
Pack only essentials, or challenge yourself to buy things locally. It makes the trip more fun than stressful.
5. Let go of “perfect”
The trip won’t be flawless. But it will be memorable, and that’s the point.
This wasn’t a story about money. It was a story about spontaneity. Vir Das didn’t wait for the “right time,” a long weekend, or for things to feel perfect. And maybe that’s the lesson here. Sometimes, the best holidays aren’t the ones you plan for months. They’re the ones you take because you need to breathe, even if it means wearing an “I Love Thailand” T-shirt for half the trip.
