Actor Hina Khan recently shared a glimpse of a nostalgic Kashmiri tradition, showing how freshly handpicked Duoin, or walnuts, are peeled and eaten while they are still soft. Unlike the dry walnuts usually found in stores, these fresh walnuts are picked directly from the tree and go through several layers of peeling before the tender kernel is ready to eat. Scroll down to learn how she does it as a Kashmiri.

Here’s How Hina Khan Peels Fresh Kashmiri Walnuts

In the video shared by Hina Khan, she highlighted a step-by-step process on how to peel walnuts the right way. Read on to know more.

  • Pluck fresh walnuts from the tree: The process begins with freshly picked green walnuts, which still have their thick green outer covering. Hina’s video shows a plate full of these freshly harvested walnuts.
  • Remove the green outer husk: The first step is to peel away the thick green outer layer surrounding the walnut. Once this is removed, the familiar hard walnut shell is revealed underneath.
  • Crack open the walnut shell: Carefully break the shell to reach the kernel inside. The video shows the walnut being cracked open while keeping the soft kernel intact.
  • Take out the walnut kernel: Once the shell is opened, the pale, tender walnut meat can be removed. Since these are freshly harvested walnuts, the kernel is much softer than the dried walnuts commonly eaten.
  • Peel it again: This is the part that makes fresh Kashmiri dooin different. After removing the hard shell, Hina peels away the thin layer covering the walnut kernel as well. The video shows her carefully separating this delicate skin from the soft nut.
  • Enjoy the freshly peeled dooin: Once all the layers are removed, the soft, pale walnut kernel is ready to eat. Hina describes the process as a lot of work but says nothing beats the taste of hand-plucked duoin.

The video offers a glimpse into a simple Kashmiri food tradition and the childhood memories associated with eating walnuts fresh from the trees, rather than buying the familiar dried version from a store.
