Jolbhora Sandesh Gets The Prestigious GI Tag
As per a report by NDTV, Jolbhora Sandesh appears like a regular sandesh on the outside, but its name shows the surprise within. In Bengali, ‘jol’ means ‘water’ and ‘bhora’ means ‘filled’. The sweet consists of a soft chhena (cottage cheese) shell filled with liquid rose syrup or nolen gur (date palm jaggery syrup). The surface layer is somewhat sweet, while the liquid inside explodes with taste when you take the first bite.

The GI tag is granted under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, by the Geographical Indication Registry as per the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It confirms that a product’s features and reputation are related to a specific region, preventing it from imitation while preserving traditional craftsmanship.
The Story Behind Jolbhora Sandesh
As per the news portal, Jolbhora Sandesh was invented back in 1818 as part of Bengal’s amusing custom of teasing a newly married son-in-law. The zamindar of Telenipara reportedly asked confectioner Surjya Kumar Modak to prepare a sweet that would surprise the groom. Modak and his son created a sandesh with a hidden liquid centre made of rose water and jaggery. When the unaware son-in-law bit into it, the syrup spilt onto his clothes, making the prank a memorable success.
Tourists can still enjoy authentic Jolbhora Sandesh at Surjya Kumar Modak, said to be its birthplace, along with popular sweet shops such as Seal Sweets and Felu Modak in and around Chandannagar.

Making the sweets at home calls for careful planning and preparation. A firm chhena dough is formed into small cups, filled with syrup or liquid jaggery, and sealed tightly without letting the filling leak.
