What Is Kavach?
According to a PIB release, the latest version has been commissioned across 108 route kilometres on the Malkajgiri-Kamareddi section of the Hyderabad Division. Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to help loco pilots maintain prescribed speed limits and automatically apply brakes in critical situations.
The system is aimed at preventing Signal Passing At Danger (SPAD), controlling train speeds during emergencies and reducing the risk of collisions. It is also designed to support safer train operations during adverse weather conditions.
Kavach comprises several components working together, including Station Kavach, RFID tags installed along tracks, telecommunication towers, Optical Fibre Cables (OFC) and Loco Kavach equipment fitted on locomotives.
What Is Kavach 4.0 For Indian Railways?
Kavach 4.0 is the latest version of the train protection system. It builds on the operational experience gained from Kavach Version 3.2, which has been deployed across 1,465 route kilometres on South Central Railway.
The first commissioning of Version 4.0 covers 108 route kilometres on the Malkajgiri-Kamareddi section.

How Is Kavach 4.0 Different?
Kavach 4.0 brings several technological upgrades over Version 3.2:
More accurate train positioning: The upgraded system offers greater location accuracy, helping determine a train’s position more precisely in relation to signals and railway infrastructure.
Improved signal information: It provides better information on signal aspects in larger yards, where railway operations can be more complex.
Station-to-station communication: Kavach 4.0 introduces communication between stations through Optical Fibre Cable (OFC), strengthening the system’s communication network.
Direct integration with electronic interlocking: The latest version can integrate directly with existing Electronic Interlocking Systems, allowing closer coordination with railway signalling infrastructure.
While the technology has been upgraded, the fundamental purpose of Kavach remains the same: assisting loco pilots with speed regulation and automatically applying brakes when necessary to prevent dangerous situations.

Indian Railways has said Kavach 4.0 is planned for large-scale deployment across the network. The system requires Safety Integrity Level-4 (SIL-4) certification, the highest level of safety integrity certification, reflecting its critical role in railway operations.
