Lord Vitthal, or Vithoba, is a form of the Hindu god Lord Vishnu or Lord Krishna. He is worshipped across Maharashtra and Karnataka. Lord Vitthal is typically shown in a majestic stance with his hands on his waist. Maharashtra has now taken its devotion to another level by unveiling a 51-foot idol at the Punyashloka Ahilyadevi Holkar Upvan Ghat in Thane on Friday.
It was definitely a moment of celebration, devotion, culture, and Maharashtra’s rich spiritual heritage. According to a report by Press Trust of India, the 51-foot statue was unveiled by Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who called the occasion a very special day. A Symbol Of Faith And Devotion
The 51-foot grand idol stands tall at the sacred Upvan Lake, a popular spiritual spot among the people of Thane. Lord Vitthal’s immense height and black-coloured form make the idol look truly magnificent. The golden crown adds a royal touch, making the statue look even more divine. According to a report by Newsband, the idol was sculpted by a Kolhapur artist, Satish Gharge. Around the statue, lamp towers or ‘deepmalas’ have been placed, which will illuminate the entire area in the evening. Not just that, a floating stage has also been built on the lake for special performances.
As per Press Trust of India, a huge crowd had gathered for the unveiling, including several ‘warkaris’: devotees who follow the Vaishnavite Bhakti tradition. The Deputy Chief Minister also mentioned that he himself comes from a Warkari family. He also called it a special day as Lord Vitthal had given his darshan to the people of Thane before the “mahapuja of Kartiki Ekadashi”. This is indeed a proud moment for Maharashtra.
