Every year, as the winter chill recedes and the doors of the Kedarnath Temple prepare to reopen, a deeply revered tradition unfolds in the Garhwal Himalayas. The Panchmukhi Doli procession marks the ceremonial journey of Lord Shiva in his five-faced form from Omkareshwar Temple to Kedarnath Dham. Accompanied by priests, devotees, and traditional rituals, this spiritual journey not only signals the beginning of the annual Kedarnath Yatra but also reflects centuries-old faith and devotion tied to one of India’s most sacred shrines.
What Is The Panchmukhi Doli Tradition Of Kedarnath?
“Panchmukhi” means five-faced in Hindi and represents the idol of Lord Shiva in five forms and is worshipped during the winter months. When the Kedarnath Temple shuts due to heavy snowfall, the Panchmukhi idol is carried in a ceremonial doli (palanquin) from Kedarnath to Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath.
During this period, devotees visit Omkareshwar Temple instead of Kedarnath to offer prayers. With the onset of summer, typically in April or May, when the Char Dham Yatra resumes, the Panchmukhi Doli is taken back to Kedarnath in a grand procession. This deeply spiritual tradition in Uttarakhand thus marks both the closing and reopening of the Kedarnath shrine each year.

Following traditional Vedic rituals and temple customs, the Panchmukhi Doli has begun its journey to Kedarnath. The multi-day procession will make scheduled stops along the route, reaching Phata on April 19, Gaurikund on April 20, and finally arriving at Kedarnath on April 21.
