Why An IndiGo Flight From Kolkata Made An Emergency Landing At Chennai Airport?

A full emergency was declared at Chennai Airport late Tuesday night after an IndiGo flight from Kolkata stated that its left engine was inoperative, prompting airport authorities to activate emergency response measures ahead of its arrival. The aircraft, carrying 224 people, landed safely at Chennai Airport, and the emergency was withdrawn shortly afterwards.

IndiGo Flight Makes An Emergency Landing At Chennai Airport

According to reports by Hindustan Times, the full emergency was declared at 11:29 pm for IndiGo flight 6E-723, which was flying from Kolkata to Chennai. The aircraft was planned to arrive at 11:30 pm but was expected to reach Chennai at around 11:37 pm after reporting the left-engine issue.

Airport officials activated the required emergency arrangements to ensure the aircraft could land safely. The flight finally touched down on Runway 25 at 11:37 pm, with all 224 people on board. The Chennai airport authority stated that the full emergency was formally withdrawn at 11:47 pm, after which normal airport operations resumed.

Speaking on the incident, the airport authority stated that following the declaration of the Full Emergency, the necessary emergency response arrangements were initiated to facilitate the safe arrival of the aircraft. They further added that the aircraft landed safely and all operations were normal.

IndiGo Reported Similar Incidents In The Past

If reports are to be believed, the Chennai incident comes after a series of technical emergencies involving IndiGo flights in the past few months.

Last month, an international IndiGo flight en route from Dubai to Mumbai made an unscheduled landing at Rajkot Airport after the pilots received an alert about smoke in the aircraft’s lower cargo hold. The crew requested a priority landing clearance, following which fire tenders and medical teams were positioned near the runway as a precaution.

Back in March 2026, another IndiGo flight headed toward Delhi triggered a full emergency after reporting an engine failure shortly before landing. Flight 6E 579, operating from Visakhapatnam to New Delhi with 161 people on board, was given high priority to land at Indira Gandhi International Airport. The aircraft landed safely, and all passengers and crew members were reported safe.
