On Saturday, a slab at a Mumbai Metro Line 4 construction site in Mulund collapsed, claiming one life and leaving three others seriously injured. Following the incident, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has halted construction work across the entire Metro 4 corridor, and a comprehensive safety inspection is now underway.
All Construction On Mumbai Metro 4 Corridor Halted
According to Hindustan Times, MMRDA has made a ‘Special Intensive Safety Inspection Team’, with 13 officials, to examine safety lapses along the entire Mumbai Metro 4 route. They added that the 32.32-kilometre corridor will only resume once the inspection team submits a report and adequate measures are in place to address lapses.
As per the internal office order, issued by Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Ashwin Mudgal, the 13-member inspection team will carry out a “comprehensive, corridor wise and without exception inspection, covering every nook and corner of Metro 4.”

As per the HT report, the team will verify whether the on-ground construction matches the approved architectural drawings. They will also examine key structural and safety elements, including parapets, edge beams, crash barriers, handrails, overhead structures above traffic and public areas, safety nets, barricading, and traffic protection systems, among other measures.
The inspections began on Sunday, and it will take another 3-4 days for the team to cover all bases. If any safety lapses are noted, the team has been instructed to flag the issue immediately. They will then list out all the safety lapses and suggest corrective measures for the same as well. After all this is done, only then will the MMRDA allow construction to resume.
As of now, the Government of Maharashtra has suspended an executive engineer and fined the contractors and consultants involved in the project ₹6 crore.
