Why Is The Twin Elephant Birth In Jim Corbett National Park A Rare Wildlife Event?

In Jim Corbett National Park, an elephant has now given birth to twin calves. The probability of giving birth to twin calves is just 1%, which is why the occurrence is considered very rare. The birth has piqued the interest of experts and tourists, who are now flocking to the national park for a glimpse of the elephant family.

Rare Twin Elephant Birth In Jim Corbett National Park

This is definitely great news for India’s wildlife, as the birth of twin elephant calves is considered very rare, occurring in less than 1% of pregnancies. The female elephant in Uttarakhand’s Jim Corbett National Park has thrilled experts and many tourists. The good news was announced by Ramesh Pandey from Indian Forest Service on his official X account. According to Hindustan Times, forest department officials have intensified monitoring protocols in the national park after the birth of the twin elephant calves to minimise disturbance. 

The calves were born in the Garjiya tourism zone of the park and are healthy. The mother is also doing fine. The rare twin birth came to light after wildlife enthusiast Sanjay Chhimwal spotted the elephant family during a jungle safari. He shared with Hindustan Times that the sight of the elephant family was highly unique and exciting.

Tourists Flocking To National Park For A Glimpse

According to Hindustan Times, the news of the twin birth has now piqued the interest of not just experts but tourists as well. Many people are now visiting the Garjiya tourism zone for a rare glimpse of the elephant family. You should know that the region has the largest elephant population in Uttarakhand, with over 1,200 recorded pachyderms. The birth of the twin calves also shows that the region is safe, healthy, and positive for wildlife.

A twin birth in elephants is considered extraordinary because after a gestation period of 22 to 24 months, elephants typically give birth to only one calf. This rare birth is now being called highly astonishing. Plus, it also reflects the success of ongoing conservation efforts in the Jim Corbett National Park, secure forest areas, a favourable environment, and, of course, adequate food.
