Ever since its launch, Digi Yatra, India’s digital travel initiative, has rapidly transformed air travel in the country. With over 19 million users on board, the platform aims to make airport experiences smoother and faster by making paperless check-ins and seamless boarding the new norm. The government now targets an 80% adoption by 2028, signalling a major shift towards digital-first air travel in India. Scroll on to know more about this.
Digi Yatra Has Reached Over 19 Million Users
According to NDTV, Digi Yatra has crossed 19 million downloads now, achieving around 30% adoption. Since its launch, the privacy-by-design air travel platform has ensured 77 million seamless journeys across 24 airports. To make the platform more user-friendly, Digi Yatra is also working to incorporate regional languages in the app.
The platform has started a beta rollout in six regional languages through its partnership with Bhashini. This feature will eventually cover all 22 Indian languages, making digital air travel more accessible and user-friendly across the country. Over time, the app has also allowed flyers to access boarding passes from major airlines and travel apps such as IndiGo, Air India, and MakeMyTrip, making the overall journey seamless.

Plans For Future Expansion
Now, the authorities are aiming for 80% adoption by 2028. That’s not all, they are also preparing for global interoperability in 2026. Wait, there is more! As per NDTV’s report, Digi Yatra is piloting electronic passport-based enrollment for international travel, following its first global user registration. This will allow expats, NRIs, and foreign travellers to use digital ID verification instead of manual checks, paving the way for smoother, faster journeys.
To make this a reality, the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Bureau of Immigration, ICAO, and IATA have come together with Digi Yatra under the OneID program. The initiative will establish a system for sharing passport and visa credentials, enable automated border control, and roll out international pilot trials in the next financial year.
