160-YO Delhi Town Hall Set To Turn Into Global Heritage Hub; To Showcase City’s Culture & Cuisine

Town Hall Chandni Chowk

The Delhi government is all set to redevelop the old Town Hall complex in Chandni Chowk into a global heritage centre. The place will showcase Delhi’s art, culture, and cuisine, attracting tourists from across the world. The decision was announced recently by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta while presenting the Budget for 2026-27. Here’s what we know so far about this project.

Town Hall In Chandni Chowk To Get A New Life

Before we get into details, let us tell you that the historic Delhi Town Hall is a landmark building in Chandni Chowk. It was built by the British between 1861 and 1866 and served as the seat of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) from 1866 during the British Raj till late 2009. According to Hindustan Times, the structure fell into severe disrepair after the MCD moved to its current headquarters at the Civic Centre.

The Town Hall has been lying in ruins for years, and no one is apparently taking proper care of it. But Delhi’s CM Rekha Gupta has now made an announcement, after speaking to the central government. This place will now be turned into a global heritage centre. This means that massive redevelopment work will be done for this historical building.

Complex To Showcase Delhi’s Culture, Art & Cuisine

According to Hindustan Times, the redeveloped complex will serve as a focal point for cultural activities in the city. It will showcase the capital’s talent, culture, art, and cuisine. In short, the Town Hall in Chandni Chowk will offer a rich cultural experience to all its visitors.

Moreover, this project also aligns with the vision of ‘One City, One Global Destination’, under which Delhi is set to be redeveloped as a world-class cultural hub with improved infrastructure. This project will also enhance tourism, heritage sites, and ensure stronger connectivity, along with better amenities.

Reportedly, this is not the first time a plan like this has been proposed to redevelop the Delhi Town Hall. Over the past decade, several proposals have been floated to transform the building into a museum, hotel, and even a restaurant. But none of the plans became reality.
