Your Takeaway Coffee Cups May Not Be That Safe, And No, Caffeine Is Not The Reason

Are you also that coffee person who often stops for a coffee run before going to the office or maybe while shopping? If yes, then this is for you! A new study has now pointed towards a hidden danger in your takeaway coffee cup, and no, it’s not caffeine; it’s microplastics! 

Takeaway Coffee Cups May Release Microplastics

Yes, we know takeaway coffee cups look aesthetic and, for some reason, coffee tastes a little more delicious from a takeaway cup. It gives us that important feeling, right? But did you know your takeaway might not be quite safe? According to a new study by the University of Queensland, single-use paper cups often used by cafes for coffee and other hot beverages can release millions of microplastic particles when exposed to hot liquid.

The researchers from UQ’s Queensland Alliance for Environmental Health Sciences examined single-use cups lined with fossil-based polyethylene (PE) or the biodegradable alternative polylactic acid (PLA). According to Dr Elvis Okoffo, both types of cups released microplastics. But the biodegradable plastic-lined cups released 12 times more! This is shocking, right?

Paper Cups Are Not Completely Plastic-Free

We all know that single-use paper cups are used by millions of people around the world for tea and coffee. According to the official website of The University of Queensland, Australia, a cup made of paper does not mean it is plastic-free. These cups are often lined with a thin plastic lining, which makes them water-resistant and gives them structure.

Researchers measured approximately 4.3 million particles per millilitre from PLA-lined cups. On the other hand, the PE-lined cups released 2.7 million particles per millilitre on contact with hot water. These nanoparticles are thousands of times thinner than a human hair. This does not mean that paper cups are completely unsafe or that people should stop using them.

But yes, people can avoid paper cups whenever they can and stick to ones that are safer. Moreover, manufacturers can also consider developing cup linings that release fewer plastic particles when exposed to hot liquid. Some alternatives to takeaway coffee paper cups are insulated stainless steel cups, tempered glass and ceramic cups.
