Its the Year of Tolerance and an Indian businessman is doing his bit to make the year meaningful. Firoz Merchant, founder and chairman of retailer Pure Gold Group has paid off AED 1 million to free 700 prisoners in the UAE. The prisoners would not have been able to afford the huge sum, if not for Firoz’s noble deed. Firoz said that the gesture was to mark the 48th UAE National Day and the Year of Tolerance.
What’s In It?
The businessman released prisoners from 30 different countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, India, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia and Thailand. This gave the prisoners another chance and and return to their home country. The noble deed is a part of Forgotten Society- a programme he founded in 2008. “The UAE is home to people of various cultures and religions, and the country has given hope and second chances to many,” said Mr Merchant.
Mr Merchant was also among the few expats to receive permanent residency earlier this year.
What Else?
That’s not it. The UAE also took a big step, marking the Year of Tolerance. In an attempt to promote religious harmony, a new landmark will soon be constructed in Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island. The Abrahamic Family House (Inspired by Prophet Abraham), will feature a mosque, church and a synagogue- all under one roof, permitting people from different faiths to unite in the harmony and purity of worship.
Following the historic visit of Pope Francis in February this year, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi announced an initiative to promote interfaith harmony.
The mosque faces the Kaaba in Makkah, the church’s points east towards the sun, and the synagogue faces Jerusalem. Construction will begin soon and will be completed by 2022.
This is one of UAE’s best initiatives marking the Year of Tolerance and we truly can’t be prouder!
