Expecting more than one crore people to travel home over the festive season, the Indian Railways has decided to run around 6,000 special trains to manage the rush. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that these special trains will facilitate the journey of people heading home for Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath festivals. Read on to know more about it.

Ahead of the festive season, the demand for train travel increases significantly. Millions of people travel home to enjoy the festivities with their families. Understanding this increased demand during the festive season, the Indian Railways has decided to run 6,000 special trains to cater to one crore passengers.

According to a Hindustan Times report, train routes headed to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal experience significant demand during the festive season. People head home to celebrate Durga Puja (starting October 6), Diwali (November 1), and Chhath Puja (November 7 and 8) in these areas.

However, it is to be noted that the routes, dates, and timings of these special trains haven’t been announced yet.

Special Trains To Ferry More Than 1 Crore Passengers

Besides running more trains, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also announced that the number of general coaches will be increased for 108 trains on these routes. The Indian Railways will add 12,500 coaches for Chhath Puja and Diwali special trains.

As per Ashwini Vaishnaw, these special trains and increased train coaches will facilitate the movement of more than one crore passengers heading home for the festive season. So far, 5,975 special trains have been notified to run during this peak season. Last year, the Railways ran 4,429 special trains during this time.

Trains are the lifeline of public transport in India and booking tickets during the festive season is almost a nightmare. So, running these special trains is indeed a great initiative by Indian Railways.
