Indians are embracing both domestic and international travel this festive season, with Skyscanner’s latest data revealing fascinating travel patterns for the travel rush at the end of the year. The peak travel dates showing the highest search volumes are December 21 and 27. This indicates a strong preference for Christmas week getaways. On the domestic front, there’s been a remarkable 32 per cent surge in searches for Christmas week travel compared to the previous year. For the period of December 21-31 2024, metropolitan hubs dominate the booking landscape.

New Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kolkata and Goa emerged as the most sought-after destinations. The wanderlust extends beyond borders as well, with international travel searches climbing 29 per cent for Christmas week compared to 2023.

Indian travellers are setting their sights on diverse destinations, with London, Dubai, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Toronto leading the pack for year-end travel. Looking ahead to 2025, Skyscanner’s trend report unveils some surprising emerging destinations.

Destinations That Saw An Increase In Search During Year-End

Shillong, nestled in India’s northeastern region, has witnessed an astounding 828 per cent increase in search interest. It claimed the top spot among trending destinations. The ancient city of Baku, Azerbaijan, follows closely with a 744 per cent surge.

The Malaysian archipelago of Langkawi has seen searches soar by 433 per cent. The list also highlights the growing interest in unique destinations like Tromsø, Norway. It is known for its Northern Lights; and the historic Silk Road city of Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Middle Eastern destinations are gaining traction too, with both al-Ula and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia featuring prominently. Asian favourites haven’t lost their charm either, with Krabi, Colombo and Tokyo rounding out the top ten trending destinations, showcasing the diverse travel aspirations of Indian holidaymakers.
