From an outsider’s perspective, the aviation industry may seem as normal as any other industry. But every industry has its politics and a leader, and in the case of most monopoly aerial routes covered, IndiGo wins the game. With over 72% of routes covered, here’s how IndiGo is soaring past the other airlines.

It seems like almost every other week we hear of an airline company halting its business due to lack of funds or other reasons. In a time when airlines are consolidating, IndiGo has raised both concern and praise for gravitating towards a monopolised business plan.

A monopoly in any sector of business has its own pros and cons. It could help streamline and delegate responsibilities or it could create a competitive environment for everyone involved.

In a report by OAG Aviation provided specifically to Moneycontrol, approximately 1,048 aerial routes are operational in India. Of which, Mumbai-Delhi is summed up to one route, and Delhi-Mumbai is a separate route.

Surprisingly, 830 of these routes are dominated by IndiGo. Of the 1,048 routes, 769 of them are monopolized. This means that just one airline operates on that route. From the 769 routes, IndiGo has a tight clutch over 552 of such monopolized routes.

The only other airline to come close is the only government-owned airline, Alliance Air. Alliance Air comes in second with 158 routes under its belt. Then we have Air India with 153 routes and SpiceJet at 119.

Lastly, Vistara currently has 100 routes under its wing. As per data provided by OAG, Vistara is set to be merged with Air India Airlines by next year.

Upon a closer look at the schedule, it becomes apparent that the airline has successfully established dominance. The airlines have connections between cities that are not obligatory according to the Route Dispersal Guidelines.

Noteworthy examples include flights from Bhopal, Vadodara, Dehradun, or Rajkot to Goa’s Manohar International Airport. Apart from this, connections between Tier 2 cities like Lucknow and Ranchi, or Bhopal and Udaipur are also under IndiGo.

Such initiatives not only stimulate tourism but also facilitate trade.
