Why Siem Reap? The Cultural And Religious Connection

IndiGo’s choice to prioritise Siem Reap over Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital city, is no coincidence. The ancient city is home to Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious monument spanning 402 acres. Originally a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Angkor Wat was later transformed into a Buddhist shrine, making it a symbol of religious harmony and architectural brilliance.

Siem Reap also houses the mystical Angkor Thom, a sprawling 9 sq km complex with iconic landmarks like the Bayon Temple and Baphuon. Other gems include Banteay Srei, a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and Ta Prohm, famously featured in the movie Tomb Raider. Interestingly, the Archaeological Survey of India has played a pivotal role in conserving these Cambodian treasures, adding a unique layer to the cultural connection between the two nations.
