According to an article that was recently published by The Times Of India or the TOI, a number of international airlines have taken precautionary measures by cancelling or rescheduling their services. Jetstar suspended all Bali flights until Thursday noon.

They cited hazardous flying conditions. Virgin Australia, on the other hand, cancelled all Wednesday flights to the island. Other affected carriers include Qantas, Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, India’s IndiGo and Singapore’s Scoot.

The primary concern stems from volcanic ash’s potential to damage jet engines and obscure windscreens, creating dangerous flying conditions. Airlines are working to minimise inconvenience by offering affected travellers options including refunds, rebooking or alternative routing.

The impact has extended beyond air travel, with a jazz festival in Labuan Bajo — approximately 600 kilometres from the eruption site — being postponed due to safety considerations.

Indonesia’s location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” means the country houses around 130 active volcanoes, making it one of the world’s most seismically active regions. This geological positioning has historically resulted in similar disruptions to both aviation and local activities.

Travellers planning trips to Indonesia, especially areas near active volcanoes like Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki, are advised to monitor local advisories and airline announcements closely. Maintaining flexible travel arrangements and securing comprehensive travel insurance with natural disaster coverage is strongly recommended for smoother journeys.

Authorities and airlines continue to monitor the volcanic activity closely as the situation develops, prioritising the safety of both residents and visitors. Passengers affected by cancellations should contact their respective airlines directly for the latest information and assistance.
