Indonesia: Ferry, Carrying 65, Sinks Near Bali; 4 Dead & 30 Missing

At least four people died and around 30 went missing after a ferry sank near Indonesia’s Bali. The ferry was carrying 65 people and was on its way to Bali from East Java’s Ketapang port. Rescuers rushed to find victims in the rough sea and were able to save 31 people so far. Search operations for missing people are underway.

Ferry With 65 People Sinks Near Bali

According to Moneycontrol, the ferry, KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, was en route to Gilimanuk port in Bali when it sank about 30 minutes after departure from East Java’s Ketapang port. Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency confirmed this and mentioned that the ferry was carrying 53 passengers, 12 crew members, and 22 vehicles.

The authorities immediately launched a search operation. They deployed nine boats, including two tug boats and two inflatable boats, to begin the rescue ops, battling waves up to 2 metres. While talking to the media, the Banyuwangi police chief said that the rescue teams have recovered four bodies from the waters near the incident. Furthermore, they have been able to rescue 31 people, mostly unconscious.

Rescue Operations Underway

30 people are still missing after the ferry sank near Bali. While search operations for the missing are underway, the rescue teams are facing troubles due to strong currents and winds. Indonesian authorities have also deployed a helicopter to the location and 13 underwater rescuers for a better search.

Ferries are a widely used mode of transport in Indonesia, a country with more than 17,000 islands. Unfortunately, accidents are also frequent, largely due to lax safety standards that often lead to overcrowded vessels lacking proper life-saving equipment. Back in 2023, a small ferry capsized near Sulawesi Island, claiming around 15 lives.
