If you are wondering what to do on Sunday, then we have the perfect plan for you! The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has declared free entry to all its protected monuments and museums nationwide today, May 18, on the occasion of International Museum Day. Scroll on to know more about this.
Free Entry To All Monuments & Museums
To promote cultural heritage, education, and dialogue among the people, ASI is offering free access to its network of 52 museums and all the ticketed monuments across the country on May 18. Besides the museums, there are 3,698 protected monuments and sites under ASI.
The archaeological body has taken this initiative to celebrate International Museum Day. They are aiming to make India’s archaeological treasures more accessible to the general public and spark their interest in the nation’s rich history and heritage. According to The Economic Times, the ASI is also modernising its site museums with advanced technology to improve the overall visitor experience.
These ASI-protected sites house some of India’s most valuable archaeological artefacts. These range from prehistoric tools and sculptures to medieval inscriptions and more. The authorities hope that this move will help people reconnect with history.
The Archaeological Survey of India took to X to announce “The ASI is pleased to announce that entry to all ASI monuments and museums across the country will be free on May 18, on the occasion of International Museum Day. This initiative seeks to deepen public engagement with India’s rich cultural legacy and to provide a meaningful platform for people to reconnect with history and heritage.”

International Museum Day Significance
The International Council of Museums (ICOM) declared May 18 as International Museum Day in 1977. The day underscores the crucial role that museums play in preserving cultural heritage, promoting education, and fostering dialogue across communities and generations.
Museums globally celebrate this day with events in line with the theme declared by the ICOM every year. Reports suggest that over the last ten years, the day has grown significantly. Over 37,000 museums from 158 countries have been participating in its celebration in recent years.
This year, the theme is “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities”. It reimagines museums as essential connectors, innovators, and guardians of cultural identity.
