Iran Earthquake: 120 Injured As 4.9 Magnitude Tremors Strike Kashmar; 4 Killed

While natural disasters are scary, earthquakes incite fear like no other. With the scale high enough to lay a building flat to it being low enough to get completely ignored, it’s quite unpredictable. And recently, northern Iran was struck by a 4.9 magnitude earthquake, which has killed at least four people. Here’s more about this development.

About 120 people have been injured as a 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck Kashmar, which is a city in north-eastern Iran. The tremors were felt at 1:24 PM and according to the US Geological Survey, this quake hit a depth of 10 km, which is 6 miles, as reported by the Arab News. It’s worth noting that this earthquake has damaged mostly dilapidated buildings in both urban and rural areas of the city.

In fact, Alarabiya stated that the footage of the aftermath of the quake where the first respondents were working in the street was aired on state television. It could be observed from the footage that some buildings had been reduced to rubble! For those who weren’t aware, Iran sits on several tectonic plates and as a result, it’s often hit by earthquakes.

This is not the only earthquake that has claimed several lives and injured many. In the previous year, at least three were killed and more than 800 people were injured as a 5.9-magnitude quake struck the country. This quake struck the mountainous northwest, where the country shares a border with Turkey. In fact, in recent history, the nation was hit by the world’s deadliest disaster wherein a 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck the city of Bam in 2003. This killed over 31,000 people in the southeastern city of Iran.

It goes without saying that one must follow all the necessary protocols and guidelines when disasters like earthquakes happen.
