If you have travelled to Northeast India, you must have noticed the insane popularity of pork delicacies. Pork is a part of the diet of most tribal communities living in this particular part of India. Though a huge population is consuming it every day, is it actually good for our health?

Is It Currently Healthy To Eat Pork In Northeast India?

It has been centuries since tribal groups have been eating pork quite regularly in Northeast India. Apart from being protein-rich, it is a pocket-friendly food item to add to one’s regular diet as well. In the past, there have been several discussions and research on pork consumption and its related effects on health. This time, people are getting more and more anxious about the significant problems of humans suffering from zoonotic diseases from pigs.

A recently published report by Down To Earth highlighted how foodborne trematodes infections are becoming a major concern. Some of the common trematodes talked about very often in Northeast India are Fasciola gigantica, Fasciolopsis buski, and Paragonimus westermani. Trichinella spiralis has been found in many places in different parts of the world. Romania is one of them.

Eating pork is not the main reason for people suffering from infections and diseases. However, the consumption of undercooked pork can be harmful to your health. Dishes prepared with this meat but not cooked up to the mark can trigger human health badly. Some of the common infections that one may suffer from after consuming underdone pork are Artyfechinostomum malayanum, Artyfechinostomum sufrartyfex, Gastrodiscoides hominis, and Opisthorchis noverca.

Infections transmitted to humans from pork can lead to major health problems. Parasites from this meat can affect humans’ gastrointestinal system. It can even harm neurological health. The rise in zoonotic diseases due to pork is becoming a major worrisome issue in Northeast India.

The unexpected jump in African Swine Fever led to the insufficiency of healthy pigs. The disease has turned out to be a disappointing issue for pig farmers due to its severe impact on the farming industry.
