It Is Now A Punishable Offence In Kerala To Talk To Your Pillion Rider; Penalties To Be Imposed

In a bold move to enhance road safety, the Kerala Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) has introduced a stringent new rule. It is now a punishable offence in Kerala for two-wheeler riders to engage in conversation with their pillion passengers. The department has issued a clear directive to all Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) to enforce this regulation without compromise.

The decision to impose this ban stems from a growing body of evidence highlighting the perilous consequences of distracted driving. Engaging in conversation while operating a motorcycle is a significant distraction. This can severely impair a rider’s ability to react swiftly to hazardous road conditions. Actions as seemingly innocuous as turning the head to talk or making minor postural adjustments can dramatically reduce a rider’s control. This can increase the risk of accidents, particularly in high-speed or congested traffic environments.

The MVD has highlighted the seriousness of the issue. It aims to discourage dangerous riding by introducing penalties for those who break the new rule. Although the exact fine is yet to be announced, the department clearly intends to prioritise road safety and punish offenders.

Promoting Voluntary Compliance

Joint Transport Commissioner K Manoj Kumar has issued a stern warning to RTOs, emphasising the imperative of strict enforcement of the regulation. The MVD will eliminate this preventable cause of accidents to create a safer road environment for all.

The MVD has emphasised that the focus will be on creating awareness and promoting voluntary compliance. The department also plans to conduct regular awareness campaigns to educate the public about the dangers of distracted driving and the importance of adhering to the new rule.

As the law comes into effect, motorcyclists in Kerala face a period of adjustment. While the initial reaction may be one of resistance, it is essential to recognise the underlying intent of the rule – to protect lives. By prioritising safety over convenience, riders can contribute to a safer road environment for themselves and others.

The success of this initiative hinges on a combination of strict enforcement, public awareness, and a collective commitment to road safety. Only through a concerted effort can Kerala hope to reduce the number of accidents caused by distracted driving and create a safer future for all road users.
