Italy Floods: 305 Landslides, 14 Killed & More Than 36,000 People Displaced From Homes

In case you haven’t been following the news, Italy has been struck by deadly floods. Especially the northeastern parts of Italy have gotten it the worst. The region of Emila Romagna has also suffered significantly and many parts of the European country have been reduced to rivers. Violent rains have rendered many parts of the country inaccessible by road. Even the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, returned from the G7 Summit in Japan a day early to tend to the matter.

Italy Floods: 305 Landslides, 14 Killed, 36,000 Displaced

According to reports, this is said to be the worst flood that has hit the country in the last century. An article by The Guardian reported that so far, there have been a total of 305 landslides. These landslides have led to the shutting down and blockage of a total of 500 roads in the region.

So far, the floods have also claimed the lives of a total of 14 people and more than 36,000 people in the region have been displaced from and have lost their homes. Help has been dispatched but the constant rains are posing as an obstacle.

A team of 5,000 people has been dispatched to help the worse-affected areas. The rains started on the 19th of May, 2023 and continued for 36 hours straight. The article also mentioned that the rains were so violent in the Emilia Romagna region that about six months’ worth of downpours happened in 36 hours.

Help On The Way

The article also reported that a helicopter, which was involved in attempts to restore electricity in close to the Lugo region, ended up crashing and injuring four people who were on board. According to the mayor of Bologna, the damage that the floods have caused may take months and even years to repair.

In Ravenna, the authorities have ordered the immediate evacuation of the hamlets that are in imminent danger. The G7 countries offered to help Italy in this time of crisis and the prime minister even thanked them for it.
