Italy, A Beloved Destination Amongst Travellers
With 60 million tourists each year, Italy is the fourth most popular destination for foreign visitors. It employs more than 6% of the labour force and directly contributes more than 5% of the country’s GDP, making it a substantial economic sector, according to estimates from the Bank of Italy in 2018.
Aristocrats travelled to the peninsula in the 17th century to study and appreciate the old architecture, regional culture, and scenic beauty, which is when Italy’s tourism industry began to flourish. Today’s top tourist destinations include places of worship, nightlife, underwater attractions, fashion, architecture, art, history, culture, and spas. The Mediterranean Sea is a popular destination for coastal tourists, while the Alps and Apennines are popular destinations for winter and summer travellers.
