According to a new survey, Indian Gen Z prefers beach getaways and island retreats over mountains. Beaches Take A Narrow Lead Over Mountains For Indian Gen Z
A recent report by Agoda revealed that beach getaways and island retreats are the preferred choices for the young generation of India. While weighing in on the age-old debate, beaches took a narrow lead for Indian Gen Z. According to the survey, 26% of Gen Z respondents prefer beaches, as compared to 25% who favour mountains.
Furthermore, millennials in India are more in favour of beach holidays! Around 29% choose serene beaches as compared to 18% who prefer mountains. So, while the allure of the Himalayas hasn’t died down, the ocean wins, albeit by a narrow margin!

Agoda Report Reveals Some Travel Habits Of New-Age Travellers
Besides choosing beaches over mountains, Agoda’s report also shared some travel habits of India’s Gen Z. To begin with, the report showed that 28% of Gen Z travellers take travel inspiration from social media and Instagram is one of their go-to sources. About 15% still rely on recommendations from friends and family.
Last-minute bookings are on the rise and Gen Z is embracing the thrill of spontaneity. Over 30% of Gen Z book their flights less than a week in advance, and 44% make last-minute hotel bookings, showcasing their flexible and adventurous approach to travel.
Another trend noted by Agoda is that travel is a shared experience for Indian Gen Z. About 41% prefer to explore the world with a partner and this marks a generational shift from millennials, who prioritise family trips over other travel styles.
An interesting finding in the report shows that budget-friendly travel is key for Gen Z. Almost 64% aim to keep their accommodation costs under ₹4,200 per person/night. Furthermore, 24% are willing to spend ₹4,200-8,400 per night. Millennials also follow closely, with 52% sharing similar spending habits.
