On Tuesday, Kupwara received prominent snowfall due to a massive Western Disturbance. This fresh snowfall caused the trees to bend under the weight of snow, and the rivers and streams to freeze.

Kupwara is located in the northern part of Jammu and Kashmir. According to CNBC TV18, the region experiences snowfall mainly between late November and early March. The peak snowfall season is between December and February. During this time, snowstorms and heavy snowfall are quite common. This also makes Kupwara a popular destination for snow sports, especially skiing.

Harsh Winter Ahead For The Region This Season

This winter is going to be a little harsh for Jammu and Kashmir. According to India Today, due to the La Nina climate phenomenon, the region will experience frequent spells of heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures this season. Early snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir has caused the temperatures in the region to drop significantly. Reportedly, the nighttime temperatures there are currently ranging between 0°C and -5°C.

While talking to India Today, Dr Mukhtar Ahmed, Director of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for Jammu and Kashmir, has confirmed this as well. He said it would be a “traditional Kashmir winter” with lots of snow and colder weather.

While the heavy snowfall is good news for tourists, it does disrupt the lives of locals in Jammu and Kashmir. From road closures to delayed flights, the challenges are endless.
