On December 26, Japan Airlines was hit by a cyberattack. The attack delayed more than 20 flights of the airlines on Thursday morning. A few hours later, Japan’s second-largest carrier was able to address the issue and restore its system. Thankfully, there were no reports of flight safety disruption in this attack.
Japan Airlines Cyber Attack Causes Flight Delays
Japan Airlines faced a cyberattack that hampered the company’s network connecting internal and external systems. The malfunction began on Thursday morning and caused problems with the airline’s baggage check-in system. According to NDTV, this delayed more than a dozen domestic and international flights at several Japanese airports. They even mentioned that there have been some delays and cancellations in flights and requested passengers to check the website for the latest information.
Japan Airlines took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the cyberattack. In the latest tweet, they said, “We have resumed ticket sales for domestic and international flights departing today. However, the “Airport Standby Service” for domestic flights departing today has been suspended. As there have been many delayed flights, please check the latest information on our website before travelling.”

All You Need To Know About This Issue
According to NDTV, the cyberattack hit Japan Airlines’s system around 7:24 AM on Thursday (2224 GMT, Wednesday). Around 8:56 AM, the airline “temporarily isolated the router (a device for exchanging data between networks) that was causing the disruption.” The airline ensured that the attack did not involve a virus or cause any customer data leak. The cyberattack has impacted year-end festive travel for many customers.
For now, the airline has suspended the “Airport Standby” service and “Same-Day Upgrade” procedures via the JAL website and JAL app for all domestic flights today. Recently, American Airlines flights were briefly grounded for an hour on Christmas Eve. This was due to a technical glitch involving network hardware.
A cyberattack on one of the major Japanese airlines is quite concerning. Not only does it disrupt travel plans but also raises concerns about data leaks among passengers.
