Japan’s Miyazaki Airport Reopens A Day After WWII Bomb Exploded Near Runway & Caused Cancellation Of 90 Flights

On Wednesday, a buried World War II-era bomb exploded near the runway of Japan’s Miyazaki Airport. Due to the sudden blast, several flights were cancelled and operations were halted at the regional airport. As per the latest update, the Miyazaki Airport resumed operations on Thursday morning. Operations Resume At Miyazaki Airport, A Day After WWII Bomb Explosion

More than 80 flights to and from Miyazaki Airport (Miyazaki City) were canceled due to the closure of the runway, as at around 7:58 a.m. on the 2nd October, an explosion took place on the taxiway.

A World War II bomb exploded on the taxiway adjacent to a runway of Japan’s Miyazaki Airport and ended up creating a seven-metre-wide and one-metre-deep crater. Located in southwest Japan, all operations were immediately shut after the blast at this regional airport.

Thankfully, as per an NDTV report, Miyazaki Airport resumed all operations on Thursday morning, just a day after the explosion. As per the report, a Japan Airlines flight to Fukuoka departed this airport around 7:40 AM local time. It was the first flight to take off from the airport since it was shut for safety checks.

After thoroughly inspecting the site of the blast, Japan’s Self-Defense Forces and authorities confirmed that the explosion was from a 500-pound wartime dud shell that was dropped in the area during World War II. No injuries have been reported due to this sudden blast.

Nearly 90 Flights Cancelled After The Incident

On Wednesday morning, a little before 8 AM local time, air traffic controllers at Miyazaki Airport heard a blast and saw smoke rising from a runway. When the officials rushed to the site, they found a wide hole there. Upon investigation and looking at the CCTV footage, they found that a buried World War II bomb explosion had caused chaos at the airport.

For security purposes, all operations were immediately shut down and this caused cancellation of nearly 90 flights at Japan’s Miyazaki Airport on Wednesday. The disruption at the airport impacted connecting flights of major airlines like Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA). As per a report, the runway damages were fixed overnight by a dedicated team. This helped the airport resume operations on Thursday morning.
