Remember those brand-printed cotton jute bags that our parents have been using to shop for groceries forever? Well, a Japanese brand is now selling those jhola bags for a whopping ₹4,000 on a US luxury store website. As you can imagine, desi netizens are amused with this fashion twist of the iconic Indian ration bags.
Indian Jhola Is Being Being Sold For ₹4,000 By Japanese Brand
If you thought that the funky Balenciaga chips bag and Louis Vuitton’s sandwich handbag were funky, then you’ve to check out the newest ‘It bag’ of the fashion world – the good ol’ Indian ration bag! An X (formerly Twitter) post by @pitdesi showed screengrabs of Nordstrom, a US luxury store website, selling Indian ration bags for $48 (₹4,127).
Japanese brand, Puebco, is selling the jhola bag as an ‘Indian Souvenir Bag’ for more than ₹4,000 and social media is having a field day! The bags have a similar structure to that of the bags that Indians have been using to shop for groceries for generations.
In fact, Puebco’s bags even have names of establishments like ‘Ramesh Special Namkeen’ and ‘Chetak Sweets’ written on them in Hindi. Describing the “woven tote”, the website says “Take a piece of India with you wherever you go with our Souvenir Bag. This stylish bag, adorned with unique designs, is perfect for carrying your essentials while showing off your love for a beautiful country. A must-have for any traveller or lover of Indian culture.”

Desi Netizens React To The Ration Bag Fashion
Desi netizens couldn’t help but laugh out loud when they saw the post. Some people pointed out how these bags were either given for free while grocery shopping or would cost anywhere around ₹50 in the Indian markets. While others shared alternative popular designs that are already found in the Indian markets.
Hundreds of people commented on the post and shared hilarious two cents about the bag designs. One netizen said, “Honestly kinda slaps, I’m tempted to give Nordstrom my $48.” Another said, “If my mother didn’t get it for free after buying groceries monthly from the shop, she would give the shopkeeper an earful and threaten to never step into the shop. That’s the nostalgia I have. My mother wouldn’t let me enter my own house if I paid Rs 4,500/- for it.”
