Flash floods are quite scary. As of course true to the name, they are unpredictable! If the authorities are not alert and people don’t follow the instructions diligently, it can also be quite fatal. But the reason why we’re talking about this is that Jordan was recently hit by flash floods. The ancient city of Petra on Sunday was brimming with tourists when it was hit by flooding. As a result, the authorities managed to evacuate about 1800 tourists from the site!
Flash Floods In Jordan
On Sunday, May 4, Jordanian authorities had to evacuate nearly 1800 tourists from Petra, which is an ancient archaeological site. They had to do so as the area was hit by a flash flood. As a result, the civil defence team managed to evacuate a majority of the recorded 1,785 tourists who visited this site. For those who are still unaware, this ancient archaeological site is a major tourist attraction for people!
Around 1800 Tourists Evacuated
As revealed by the Gulf News, this development was shown in a video published by by Jordan Meteorological Authority. It published a video, which showed the flash floods hitting the ancient city. Not to mention, tourists were seen gathering at the entrance of The Treasury. This is one of the most iconic tombs before they were evacuated from there. Similar evacuations have taken place previously as well, since the area is prone to rain and storms.

Why Is Petra Famous?
For those who aren’t aware, Petra is an ancient archaeological site and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is the remains of a once-flourishing city, and thereby draws tourists from around the world. Rising from the rose-pink cliffs, it became one of the seven wonders of the world back in 2007. Located in Southwestern Jordan, the rock-cut architecture is now what remains of the ancient Nabataean kingdom. And of course, the magnificence draws history aficionados from around the world!
So, such cases are a testament to the fact that one has to listen to the authorities in order to stay safe in these dire situations.
