Canlaon City in the Philippines is on high alert after the region witnessed volcanic quakes. Hundreds of people, locals as well as tourists have rushed from the region as officials urge evacuation. As of now, the Kanlaon volcano eruption is spewing harmful gases and ashes that are extremely toxic to humans and hence, the evacuation has been asked. According to an article which was recently published by the Hindustan Times or HT, this particular volcano crater is situated in the centre of the Philippines. More than 300 villages have been evacuated within four kilometres of the volcano.
Tourists and locals alike are fleeing from the region. They have taken temporary refuge in schools as well as community centres. This incident took place on Wednesday, September 11, 2024. Many tourist places in the city were closed and a number of classes were suspended.

Many villagers who lived near the foot of the volcano complained of sulphur smell. It turned out that sulphur emissions nearly tripled to what they normally are. The sulphur level measured in the air was around 9,985 tonnes. This was the highest since instrumental gas monitoring started.

Within just 24 hours, the region felt a total of 337 volcanic quakes. This may lead to ballistic projectiles and rockfalls which are extremely hazardous if humans are around. Hence, in order to prevent any further damage to human life, evacuation was ordered.
Plumes of smoke rose as high as 1,000 metres in pictures and videos shared on X (formerly known as Twitter). In the past nine years, Kanlaon has erupted around 15 times. It is one of the 24 active volcanoes in the Philippines.
