The Central Railway has undertaken a ₹491 crore project to build a 29-kilometre rail line between Karjat and Panvel, aiming to link Pune with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. This new line will cut travel time and decongest existing rail routes. With a planned completion date of December 2025, the Karjat–Panvel rail line is expected to significantly improve regional transport infrastructure.
Strengthening Pune-Navi Mumbai Airport Connectivity
The Karjat–Panvel rail line will serve as a vital connector between Pune and the under-construction Navi Mumbai International Airport. This link will provide travellers from Pune with faster, more direct access to the airport, which is expected to become a major aviation hub in western India. According to Mid-day, the new line will ensure seamless travel and better integration with the larger railway network.

By avoiding current congested routes, the Karjat–Panvel line is expected to reduce delays and improve efficiency. The direct link between Pune and the airport will benefit both daily commuters and long-distance travellers, offering a viable alternative to road transport, which often faces traffic bottlenecks.
Decongesting Existing Rail Routes
At present, the railway corridors between Karjat and Panvel witness heavy movement of suburban, long-distance, and freight trains. This congestion often leads to delays and slower transit times. As reported by Mid-day, the new Karjat–Panvel line will ease the pressure on existing tracks and improve overall punctuality.
This dedicated line will allow better train management and scheduling, making it easier for the Central Railway to handle increased traffic in the future. The project includes the construction of tunnels, bridges, and stations, further enhancing its long-term value.
A Boost For Regional Growth And Development
Beyond improving travel convenience, the Karjat–Panvel rail line is expected to drive regional development. Improved connectivity will likely lead to increased business activity, real estate development, and job opportunities in the surrounding areas. As noted by Trak.in, this infrastructure initiative aligns with broader government efforts to improve urban transport and regional mobility in Maharashtra.
With faster access to the Navi Mumbai International Airport, Pune’s connectivity to global markets will also improve. This boost in accessibility is expected to benefit businesses, tourists, and residents alike.
