Around 180 residents of a village in Kalaburagi, Karnataka were hospitalised after drinking contaminated tap water. The people fell ill after consuming muddy contaminated water for three days. The residents, reportedly, have been complaining about receiving muddy tap water for over a week now. Read on to know more about this incident.
Residents In Kalaburagi Hospitalised Due To Contaminated Water
Since Sunday, around 180 people of Nimbarga Village in Kalaburagi, Karnataka have been hospitalised after consuming contaminated tap water. As per a Hindustan Times report, these people are being treated at the nearby Primary Health Centres, while the more severe ones were taken to Alanda and Kalaburagi government hospitals.
The population of the village is around 500 and residents believe that at least one or two people of each family in the area have been infected with the water-borne disease. For now, a medical team has now been deployed in the village with the necessary medicines and IV fluids. Children, women, and the elderly have been the worst affected by this incident and people have been suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea.
Village Has Been Receiving Muddy Water For Over A Week
As per reports, the people in the village have been complaining about receiving muddy tap water for a week now. However, their complaints were not taken seriously. According to the Hindustan Times report, despite repeated reminders to clean the underground water tank and storage containers, the officials paid no heed. With no choice, the residents of this village in Kalaburagi were forced to drink the contaminated water.
Reportedly, 80 people were hospitalised on Sunday and the number rose to 180 by Wednesday evening. What should be noted is that around 90% of the village relies on water supplied through public taps and tanks for all their water needs. Only a few own borewells or open wells in the area.
As per the latest update, all water containers in the village were cleaned on Wednesday and safe water is now being provided to the people.
This incident is quite concerning. We hope the authorities take strict actions to avoid such negligence in the future.
