Kerala: 47 School Students Suffer From Food Poisoning; Seek Medical Help

About 47 students from the Woup School in the Muttill district of Kalpetta, Kerala, have sought medical attention for symptoms of food poisoning, which include fever, vomiting, and cramping in their stomachs.

Food Poisoning Incident Among Students In Kerala

After eating at school on Friday, children ages 4 to 12 experienced negative effects. After experiencing bodily difficulty, they went to the hospital on Sunday to receive treatment. Samples of food and water were taken from the school by the Food Safety Department for examination. Due to the intensity of their fever, several of the students who were admitted to Kainatti General Hospital for treatment on Sunday were moved to the emergency care unit.

While no pupils bringing food from home were impacted, the school, which educates 1,200 students in grades LKG through 7, acknowledged that students needing medical attention were those who ate school meals, as reported by Mathrubhumi English. Hospital officials attested to their steadily improved health.

Similar Incidents In Kerala

This year, there have been multiple cases of food poisoning in Kerala. A major one was the May 2024 large breakout in Thrissur. A woman in Thrissur passed away, and 178 others became ill after consuming a dish called “kuzhimanthi” with mayonnaise at a restaurant.

In June 2024, health officials examined water supplies, and more than 300 individuals, including children, sought treatment for food poisoning in Kakkanad. A restaurant in Edachira closed in May 2024 because of unsanitary circumstances, while a restaurant in Kochi was also closed by health inspectors.

Food poisoning is brought on by bacteria found in food that has been cooked incorrectly, heated, chilled, or frozen, as well as in the vomit or stool of an affected person.
