In a progressive move to boost tourism and the events industry, the Kerala Cabinet has approved an updated liquor policy that allows alcohol to be served at three-star hotels and during special events held in notified tourism zones. While the core dry day restrictions will still apply to state-run outlets and regular bars, the new Kerala liquor policy provides a more relaxed approach for tourism-friendly venues looking to cater to both domestic and international travellers.
Kerala Liquor Policy Gives Green Light To Booze On Dry Day

The revamped Kerala liquor policy opens the door for alcohol to be served at high-profile events hosted in tourism zones. This includes marriage functions, international summits, and official gatherings held in three-star hotels or above. With prior permission, these venues will now be able to serve liquor on days when alcohol is not permitted.

Tourism stakeholders see this move as a huge leap forward in attracting high-value tourists and destination weddings. Kerala, which is already well-known for its scenic beauty and Ayurvedic retreats, can now add a new layer of luxury hospitality to its offerings.
Dry Day Rules Remain For Regular Outlets
Despite the changes, the state has retained dry day restrictions for BEVCO outlets and standard bars. These venues will remain shut on designated dry days such as election days or important religious occasions.

The decision appears to strike a balance between cultural sensitivities and the state’s economic interests. By limiting the relaxation to events and tourism zones, the Kerala government is positioning itself as both progressive and cautious.
A Boost To Kerala’s Hospitality Sector
Industry experts believe the updated Kerala liquor policy could have a ripple effect on the state’s hospitality sector. From luxury resorts and destination weddings to international conferences, this change makes Kerala more competitive with states like Goa and Rajasthan.
It’s also expected to increase local employment and encourage the use of homegrown liquors and toddy-based beverages, offering tourists a taste of Kerala in every sip.
