An Adventurous Escape To Shnongpdeng
What To Expect In Shnongpdeng
Surrounded by rolling hills, thick forests, and a sky that melts into pinks and purples by dusk, Shnongpdeng is a rare mix of raw natural beauty and thrilling adventure. It’s peaceful, almost untouched, and offers one of the clearest river experiences in all of India. It’s not unusual to see fish swimming below your boat or spot the riverbed meters beneath you — that’s how pure the water is.
What sets Shnongpdeng apart from other tourist spots is how untouched it still feels. Despite its rising popularity, the village remains quiet, clean, and deeply rooted in local culture. You’ll likely be welcomed by warm Khasi locals who keep the area spotless and calm. There’s no commercial chaos here — just simple living, serene beauty, and soul-refreshing experiences.

Where To Find It
Shnongpdeng is about 74 km from Shillong — a scenic 3-hour drive on motorable roads. It sits near the India-Bangladesh border, with good mobile network coverage (a bonus in this remote setting).
The best time to visit is October to April, when the skies are clear, the water is at its most transparent, and the nights are perfect for a riverside fire. Washrooms and food facilities are available on-site, but it’s best to pre-book, especially during weekends and peak months.
