According to a report by The Week, Kochi Metro Rail Limited has introduced affordable metro passes specifically for students. The new pass, launching on July 1, 2025, will allow students to take 50 rides for just ₹1,100 in 30 days. This gives them nearly 33% savings compared to the regular fare.

This initiative comes after repeated requests from student unions, colleges, and other educational institutions. KMRL’s Managing Director, Loknath Behera, stated that the move aims to ease the financial burden and daily travel costs faced by students. He also pointed out that, on average, students spend around ₹1,650 on 50 trips. With the new pass, they can save ₹550 monthly.

One Of The Most Student-Friendly Metro Passes In India

The Kochi Metro pass also stands out when compared to similar student schemes in other cities. While Nagpur and Pune metros offer a 30% discount and Hyderabad provides only 10%, Kochi’s 33% discount makes this one of the most student-friendly metro passes in India.

The student pass will remain valid for 30 days from the date of activation and can be used between any two stations on the Kochi Metro network. Students will have two options: ₹1,100 for a 1-month pass or ₹3,000 for a 3-month pass.

Moreover, students must be under 30 years of age and must present a valid student ID. New students without an ID card will need a letter from their institution with a photograph to get the card issued. The pass will be non-transferable, and misuse could attract penalties. The metro rail will also replace damaged cards for ₹50. KMRL has also mentioned that this pass will make commuting more flexible for students while eliminating the need to queue for tickets every day.

So, what do you think of this new initiative by Kochi Metro? We believe it could make daily travel far easier and more affordable for students in Kochi.
