The beautiful Kochi is all set to undergo a transformation that will not only renew its canals but will also modernise transportation and boost tourism. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has unveiled an ambitious project approved by the Kerala State Government. The budget for this project has been approved at ₹3,716.10 crore. With this much-needed upgrade, the city’s urban infrastructure will get a fresh new look.
Kochi Metro Rail Limited Set To Revamp The City’s Canals
The focus point of this transformation is the integrated urban regeneration and water transport system. It is a bold initiative to revive Kochi’s old canals. After being neglected for a long time, these waterways will be revitalised and will be used for transportation and recreation. Six major canals – Perandoor, Chilavannur, Edappally, Thevara, Konthuruthy, and Market Canal – will be developed, widened, and beautified. Once they are more accessible and functional, they will help reduce flooding, help with waste management, and become appealing for both locals and tourists, Hindustan Times reports.

A Boost In Transport And Tourism Ahead
This initiative doesn’t just aim to beautify the city but also focuses on boosting transformation, tourism, and urbanisation. Once these canals are turned into routes for water transport, KMRL will be able to relieve some road congestion and offer an alternative, eco-friendly mode of travel for the locals. This link between water transport and metro services will also improve connectivity across Kochi.
According to Hindustan Times reports, to make the initiative even more appealing, the canals will feature green spaces, water sports facilities, and attractive walkways. This development also focuses on boosting tourism in the city with new features like waterway routes, recreational areas, and more. Whether you are taking a walk by the water or enjoying a boat ride, Kochi will be all set to offer you a unique experience.
According to Loknath Behera, Managing Director of KMRL, the initiative has been cleared by the Kerala State Government, Hindustan Times reported. The plan includes infrastructure changes like widening the canals to at least 16.5 m, launching boat services along the Edapalli and Chilavannur canals, building an 11.5 km waterway stretch between Muttar and Chitrapuzha, and more.
Once the project is completed, the future of Kochi looks brighter with urban mobility, sustainable development, and a boom in tourism.
