The Kochi Water Metro is preparing to launch its much-anticipated service to Mattancherry by November 2024. Once completed, this new route will connect High Court Junction to Mattancherry, marking a significant milestone in the city’s public transport network.

Currently, the Water Metro operates 14 ferries across five routes, including connections from the High Court to Fort Kochi, Vypeen, and South Chittoor. In addition to the Mattancherry terminal, several other terminals are under construction. Work at Paliyamthuruth, Kumbalam, Willingdon Island, and Eroor is progressing well. However, the proposal for the construction of 21 new terminals has undergone revisions.

The Mattancherry terminal project faced setbacks earlier due to the withdrawal of the initial contractor. However, Crescent Contractors, an Ernakulam-based firm, took over the project in December 2023 and resumed work. Despite the delays, the construction is now on track, with the terminal expected to be completed within the stipulated 10-month period. The terminal will be constructed on a 1.5-acre site, featuring a jetty platform on a bridge extending into the water to ensure smooth service during low tides.

A Vital Necessity

The local community has welcomed the introduction of the Water Metro service to Mattancherry with enthusiasm. For residents and traders in Mattancherry, water transportation is a vital necessity. The area, along with Fort Kochi, is a major tourist attraction, drawing hundreds of visitors daily due to its rich cultural heritage and historic sites. However, Mattancherry has long lacked water transport connectivity, making the upcoming service a welcome development.

The new service is expected to boost tourism in Mattancherry by providing easier and faster access to the mainland than road travel. The service will enhance the livelihoods of local residents by attracting more tourists to the area.
