Kolkata International Book Fair 2025 Sees Record 27 Lakh Visitors; Books Worth ₹25 Crore Sold This Year

Ever since its inception in 1976, the Kolkata International Book Fair has been celebrating the region’s vibrant literary heritage. According to Telegraph India, the 48th edition of the book fair concluded on Sunday and drew a record 27 lakh visitors. Sudhangshu Sekhar Dey, General Secretary of the Publishers & Booksellers Guild, mentioned that there were more than 1,000 book stalls at this year’s fair.

While talking to Telegraph India, he said that 29 lakh people visited the book fair in 2024 and sold books worth ₹27 crore. However, this year’s fair was 12 days long, two days less than last year, so the 12-day figure is an all-time high record. Book sales during this Kolkata International Book Fair also reached ₹25 crore.

The closing ceremony of the 48th Kolkata International Book Fair on Sunday at the Boimela Prangan in Salt Lake was graced by state ministers Firhad Hakim, Bratya Basu and Aroop Biswas, along with Bidhannagar Mayor Krishna Chakraborty.

Germany, this year’s theme country, was a major attraction at the fair. Its pavilion was designed to resemble stacks of books and thousands of people visited it. It is to be noted that this was Germany’s first time as the fair’s theme country. This year’s fair had more than 1,000 publishers from countries like the USA, UK, France, Russia, Nepal, Spain, Peru, Guatemala and Costa Rica.
