Kolkata Metro has announced a temporary suspension of services along its Green Line (East-West Metro Corridor) from Saturday, April 26, 2025, to Monday, April 28, 2025. The suspension is part of a scheduled upgrade to enhance the system’s signalling and communication infrastructure. This crucial work aims to improve operational efficiency and safety for passengers. The halt will affect the services between Howrah Maidan and Salt Lake Sector V, with the metro authorities urging commuters to make alternative travel arrangements during these days.
Suspension Of Services For System Enhancements
As reported by the authorities, the suspension is necessary for implementing the Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system. The state-of-the-art signalling system will improve train control and operational safety, ensuring efficient and delay-free train operations. The CBTC system will significantly upgrade the metro’s infrastructure, aligning it with modern technological standards. This upgrade is part of Kolkata Metro’s ongoing effort to ensure that the city’s public transport network keeps pace with the growing demands of urban mobility.

The temporary suspension will take place over the weekend, impacting commuters who rely on the Green Line for travel. Passengers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and consider other modes of transport to reach their destinations during this time.
Changes To Service Timings And Frequency
In addition to the weekend suspension, there will be further adjustments to the Green Line’s service timings. Starting from December 14, 2024, the frequency of trains operating between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade will decrease from 150 to 114 services per day. During peak hours (9 AM to 11 AM and 5 PM to 8 PM), trains will run every 20 minutes. During off-peak hours, services will be spaced out to operate every 24 minutes. The changes support construction work at Esplanade and Sealdah stations. Passengers should check the revised schedules to avoid inconvenience.

Impact On Passengers And Alternatives
The suspension of services is likely to cause some disruption, particularly for daily commuters who depend on the Green Line for their routine travel. To help mitigate the impact, Kolkata Metro has recommended alternative travel options, including bus services and other nearby metro lines. Passengers are encouraged to check for real-time updates and stay informed via the metro’s official website and social media channels.
