Isolated spells of heavy rainfall have caused major waterlogging across several parts of Kolkata. Daily commuters were brought to a halt as water on the roads reached knee-deep levels, blocking major routes and slowing down traffic movement in the city. Read on to know more.
Several Areas In Kolkata Face Waterlogging
As per recent reports in The Hindu, heavy rains lashed multiple parts of Kolkata, causing severe waterlogging and road blockages. The rainfall brought traffic to a halt, with roads in the metropolis and several other areas nearly submerged. The water reached knee level and disrupted daily life for commuters, especially officegoers. It also slowed down traffic movement across the roads in the city. An X user @RaktimPratihar also posted the videos showing the water blockage on the roads. He urged the authorities to take necessary action.
Areas like Shyambazar, Ultadanga, Dhakuria, Ballygunge, Behala, and parts of the EM Bypass were among the worst affected. Parts of Howrah city also faced similar waterlogging issues. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers across Kolkata and nearby areas, along with isolated spells of heavy rainfall throughout Tuesday, July 8.
Civic Teams Deployed To Drain Water And Clear Roads
Due to the heavy waterlogging, civic workers and staff from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation have been working since early morning, clearing the roads and draining water to restore conditions to normalcy in the city. According to IMD officials in West Bengal, the rainfall caused temporary waterlogging in several low-lying areas, even leading to the closure of the underpass. Heavy rains also reduced visibility in parts of the city.
The IMD also issued warnings for fishermen, advising them not to venture into the North Bay of Bengal and along or off the West Bengal and Odisha coasts till July 8, as the sea conditions remain rough and risky. Heavy rains were also reported from other parts of the state, including districts like Purulia, West Midnapore, Bankura, Jhargram, East Midnapore, South 24 Parganas, and North 24 Parganas.
Authorities have deployed civic teams across the city to clear roads. However, the traffic has moved slowly since morning due to waterlogged roads in Kolkata, leading to jams across several areas.
