The Prime Minister, visibly delighted, shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “Today is a very important day for Kolkata’s transportation system. The expansion of the metro network will benefit many citizens.” He also mentioned how special it felt to come to the city during Durga Puja preparations. In a heartwarming gesture, he even travelled on the metro with students and workers who had been part of the project.
The Three New Routes Inaugurated
- The Noapara–Jai Hind Bimanbandar route is the biggest highlight of the inauguration. For the first time ever, Kolkata now has a direct metro link to the airport. The brand-new Jai Hind Airport station is being called the largest underground metro station in Asia.
- The Sealdah–Esplanade (Green Line) section is a game-changer. It completes the much-awaited East–West Metro corridor, which actually passes under the river Ganga. According to the CNBC TV18 reports, it also links Howrah and Sealdah, two of India’s busiest railway stations.
- The Beleghata–Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Orange Line) route is all about easier access to IT hubs. It connects important areas like Ruby Crossing and Sector V, CNBC TV18 reported.

A True Gift For Kolkata Travellers
For Kolkata folks catching a flight, the new Airport route of the metro means no more rushing in taxis or worrying about traffic jams on the way to the airport. Linking Howrah and Sealdah through the metro is also a massive step for daily commuters and long-distance travellers. And with the festival around the corner, thousands of travellers will experience the benefits immediately.
For Kolkata folks, this expansion feels like a Durga Puja gift. After years of waiting, the city’s metro map has become bigger and smarter, now covering the Green, Yellow, and Orange Lines. With this development, Kolkata has taken another big step forward in becoming a modern metro city.
