Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is one of China’s most famous festivals. But did you know this festival is celebrated with equal fervour in Mumbai and Kolkata, two major Indian cities? The reason is that both these cities have long-standing Chinese-Indian communities. Here’s how people in Mumbai and Kolkata are celebrating.

How Mumbai And Kolkata Celebrate Chinese New Year?

India’s only Chinatown is located in Kolkata, West Bengal, in the neighbourhoods of Tangra and Tiretta Bazaar. The town dates back to the 18th century and is known for authentic Chinese temples and delicious Chinese food. On the other hand, Mumbai also celebrates the Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year), mainly due to its small Chinese-Indian community that has been living in the city for generations.

In both cities, the Chinese New Year is celebrated with food, rituals, and prayers in Chinese temples. Just like last year, Mumbai and Kolkata are celebrating the festival this year too, and videos of the celebrations are gaining attention online. An X user, @shrutiganapatye, shared images of herself celebrating the festival with her close ones in Mumbai.

She wrote, “Celebrated Chinese New Year at Kuan Kung Temple in Mazgaon. The heritage site is a living symbol of Mumbai’s inclusive, cosmopolitan culture. As we welcome the Year of the Horse, here’s to moving forward with the resilience and speed this majestic animal represents.”
