All of us know about the 116-year-old Alipore Jail in Kolkata. This place is very significant in Indian history, especially under the British Raj. Constructed in 1906, many Indian freedom fighters were imprisoned here while the British were ruling our country. And now you can now take a look at this iconic place that has been turned into a museum very recently. Read on to know all about this museum.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the newly constructed museum on 21 September 2022. If you are a history enthusiast and are keen to know about India before independence, this place has tons of historic information to share. The times of the British Raj and how Kolkata was during that time, the Alipore Jail turned museum has a lot to teach you.

The Alipore Jail turned museum houses a lot of divisions. Each division focuses on different aspects. From a waterfront to an exhibition to a theme cafe, this place has a lot to offer its visitors.

The Museum Houses All These Facilities:

1. Exhibition

Alipore Jail museum features an Exhibition. It shows the national historic landmark standing in Kolkata for more than a century.

2. Watchtower

There is a central watchtower inside the museum.

3. INA Theme Cafe

For the tourists coming to explore this historical landmark, there are places to eat and refresh. It houses the INA Theme Cafe. You will find this cafe in the Hospital building.

4. Netaji Exhibition Room

The ground floor of the same Hospital building also houses the Netaji Exhibition Room. This place features all the exhibits of Netaji.

5. Light and Sound Show

This show shows the hardships and struggles our freedom fighters went through to gain independence from the British. You can find this show besides the hospital building. If you are interested to watch the light and sound show, the fee is ₹100.

6. Souvenir Shop

The Hospital building also houses a souvenir room.

7. Gallows Area

The names of India’s freedom fighters who were hanged in the Alipore Central Correctional Home and sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom are used in decking up the place here.
