The iconic Indian Museum in Kolkata received a bomb threat on 5th January 2024. The threat came via email and saw immediate action by local authorities. A police search and sanitise probe was launched at the site, however, thankfully no explosives were found after a thorough three-hour operation.
Bomb Scare At Kolkata’s Iconic, 200-Year-Old Museum
The museum received a disturbing bomb threat via email from an account handle – Terroriser 111. This prompted a quick police search at the iconic museum in Kolkata. This was followed by a bomb disposal squad deployment to search and sanitise the Indian Museum. However, thankfully, a thorough operation found no explosives anywhere in the building. The received email stated that several bombs were allegedly planted inside the iconic museum.
Actions Taken By The Authorities & What To Expect Next
While the search has found nothing, it is commendable that the concerned authorities were quick on their feet with all the operations. Besides the quick response from the bomb squad and police, sniffer dogs and a quick response team (QRT) were also stationed outside the museum. To know more about the threat, the cyber section of police is looking into the source and traces of the email. As of now, they have put public entry inside the museum on hold, and the probe is still on to nab the concerned offender.
Founded in 1814, the Indian Museum is the ninth oldest museum in the world. Not just that, it is the oldest and largest museum in India as well as Asia! It has 6 sections within its premises that consist of 35 galleries altogether. The art and archaeology sections of the museum are particularly famous. And this is just some surface information about the museum – imagine how important of a gem it is to the country!
