The Government of Karnataka, in a recent order, directed the Mysore breweries to suspend their third shift of operations. This shift usually takes place from 10 PM to 6 AM. The directive is dated December 6, 2023. Ahead of Christmas and New Year’s, it is bound to take a significant toll on the breweries as it is one of the most lucrative times of the year for them. Here are all the important details that you would need to know about this news.
Karnataka Government Denies Mysore Breweries 3rd Shift
According to an article which was recently published by The Print, the government of Karnataka has denied breweries in Mysore the permission to run third shifts. This means that production would be significantly impacted for all the companies that have been directed to do so. As per The Print article, there are four brands which have been denied permission for third shifts.
They are Anheuser-Busch InBev, B9 Beverages, Carlsberg India and United Breweries. All of these companies operate on three shifts and the timings of the third shift is 10 PM to 6 AM. It is important to note that this order only has breweries in its purview and not spirit makers. This means that people could witness a shift in consumption towards spirits like whiskeys rather than beers.
The reason for this permission denial is that the excise department does not have enough staff and is short on full-time officials. The Print article also stated that it was unclear if this order would be revised. It also cited a brewery employee who said that the order came as a shocker to them. They said that the impact of this order, as of now, has not been quantified.
