The Sun enters the Saturn-ruled sign of Aquarius (Kumbh Rashi) on Kumbha Sankranti. Hinduism holds that the Sun (Surya Dev) is the father of Saturn (Shani Dev). It is an auspicious day representing the reuniting of parent and son. Devotees believe that on this day, offering tarpan (religious offerings to ancestors), giving alms, and taking a holy dip in a sacred river will all provide great spiritual benefits and lessen the suffering brought on by Saturn’s influence.
