Ladakh Is Hosting Its First Astro Festival
Astrophiles, this is for you! Ladakh is all set to host its first Astro Festival in 2025. This iconic event will place Ladakh among the top destinations for those interested in stargazing and other astronomical activities. The Astro Festival will be held on 27 and 28 June (this weekend). Organised by the Union Territory’s Department of Tourism and the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, the event aims to promote tourism in Ladakh, which is already known for its clear skies and amazing astronomical assets, including its Hanle Dark Sky Reserve.
This 2-day festival will not only feature beautiful stargazing sessions but also public talks, interactive debates, and other cosmic experiences. This Astro Festival will be held in locations like the District Panchayat Resource Centre in Agling and Leh. Visitors will also be able to take part in guided stargazing and night sky observation sessions at the University of Ladakh’s Taru campus.

Why Ladakh Is a Stargazer’s Dream
It is also to be noted that Ladakh is considered an excellent location for those interested in astronomical observation. Its high altitude, clear skies, minimal pollution, and dry climate make it a dream destination for anyone who loves stargazing.
Moreover, it is home to India’s first Dark Sky Reserve: Hanle Dark Sky Reserve (HDSR), which is located in the Changthang region of eastern Ladakh. This is a designated and protected area set up to preserve the natural dark skies and promote astronomy and astrophotography.
The region also experiences very little rainfall throughout the year, which helps keep the skies clear most of the time. Furthermore, its remote location plays a crucial role, allowing visitors to view celestial objects more clearly, without interference from artificial lights.
